You may purchase the book “The Orphan Tsunami of 1700″ on Amazon.com. There is one book available at Kinokuniya bookstore in Seattle.

David gave a fascinating account of how a mysterious tsunami earthquake in 1700 allowed the Northwest to better prepare for its own natural disasters. David Yamaguchi is a regular columnist for The North American Post newspaper and holds a Phd in geology. He worked on this project during 1999-2005, shares this story linking Japan with the U.S. and Canada.

2012 Year in Review

(Scroll down for Japanese, and for 2012 Acknowledgements)

Thank you for your support as we completed our first full year of programming and operations. Over this past year:

Published “A Century of Puget Sound Nikkei Community History” publication, an updated sequel to “Coming Home,” a publication originally published by the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) in 1988. This beautiful 149-page pictorial was jointly sponsored by the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) and The North American Post (NA Post) newspaper.

Sponsored popular events featuring Japanese/Nikkei educational speakers such as Port of Seattle CEO Tay Yoshitani and philanthropist Scott Oki; cultural events including a kimono extravaganza featuring Kimono Master Yu Ugawa, and two sushi programs featuring Master Chef Shiro Kashiba and Chef Daisuke Nakazawa; benefit performances featuring Sansei jazz pianist Deems Tsutakawa; a Japanese beer garden, and more. All total, we drew several thousand attendees and received highly positive feedback.

Initiated a groundbreaking Newspaper Digital Archive Project. Co-sponsored by the University of Washington (UW), we seek to digitize historic to current issues of The NA Post newspaper. This will be the first bilingual English and Japanese newspaper to feature keyword search capability using the U.W.’s database system and technology called Contentdm©. We hope that the first sample issues from the year 1946 will be available online for viewing during the first quarter of 2013. The collection will be named NA Post (hokubei hochi) Digital Newspaper Collection.

The Project Team is comprised of: Glenda Pearson, Microfilm Department, UW Suzzallo Library: Anne Graham and Theo Gerontakos, UW Digital Initiatives Program; Gina Kessler, UW graduate intern; Maiya Gessling, UW student intern; Shihou Sasaki, NA Post; Eddy Harrison, UW East Asia Library; Shawn Schollmeyer, National Newspaper Digital Project; Yohji Kameoka, volunteer translator; Tomio Moriguchi, NA Post and Hokubei Hochi Foundation. Elaine Ikoma Ko is the main staff for the project.

Sponsored an inaugural Student Intern Program. Maiya Gessling was selected and traveled to Japan this past October. Maiya is a UW junior majoring in international studies with a minor in Japanese language. Her articles are regularly published in The NA Post newspaper.

Staff: Elaine Ikoma Ko; assisted by Travis Suzaka of The NA Post; Maiya Gessling, student intern.

Board of Directors: Tomio Moriguchi, President; Randy Tada, Secretary; Yohji Kameoka, Mick Matsuzawa, Mayumi Nakamura, Eri Takahashi

This will allow the public to access information through KEY WORD SEARCH using the latest digital technology.

4Culture has provided seed funding for this project. 4Culture is the cultural services agency for King County, Washington and support citizens and groups who preserve our shared heritage, and create arts and cultural opportunities for residents and visitors. (www.4culture.org).

The U.W. Digital Initiatives Program and the Suzallo Library Microfilm Department, have come on board as key partners to assist in the planning and implementation of this complex project. The post-WWII North American Post (Hokubei hochi) newspaper dates back to 1946. The pre-WWII paper up until the Japanese American internment was published under The North American Times (Hokubei jiji) beginning in 1902. Most of the early issues of both papers are written in Japanese.

Many newspapers have digitized for ready access for online readers, most notably, The New York Times, and locally, The Seattle Times and other news publications. Some have used the newer technology of Optical Character Recognition (“OCR”) wherein the news pages are scanned and words or characters are “recognized” using specialized software. We have conducted initial testing using OCR software in both English and Japanese and have found the accuracy rate to be low because of the poor quality of the news print and other factors.

We are currently researching and testing the approach of manually entering key words into the U.W.’s CONTENTdm data management system. This approach is initially proving to be effective and more accurate. At the end of the project, content of past issues can be searched using key word search and be made available online to the general public.

This project will start with a sample of issues starting with the year 1946 and hope to publish it on the U.W. Library Digital Collections website. We hope to secure future sponsors to digitize all the years. The foundation is excited to produce a prototype model that can be replicated by other small community newspapers and publications across the country and indeed globally.

Many thanks to our Project Team members comprised of Glenda Pearson, Anne Graham, Theo Gerontakos, U.W.; Shawn Schollmeyer of the National Digital Newspapers Program; Gina Kessler, U.W. Masters of Information School graduate student; Shihou Sasaki, The North American Post; Eddy Harrison, U.W.East Asia Library, Maiya Gessling, UW student and intern with the Hokubei Hochi Foundation; Yohji Kameoka, translator, Board member, Hokubei Hochi Foundation, Tomio Moriguchi, publisher/owner, North American Post, and Board President, Hokubei Hochi Foundation. Elaine Ikoma Ko is lead staff for the project.

“How To Eat Sushi The Expert Way Featuring Chef Shiro Kashiba and Daisuke Nakazawa” was a sell-out success. The event was held on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012, at the Nagomi Tea House in Seattle’s International District.. Please click here to see slides from the event’s program: Slides from Nov 3rd Event

This was the second in a two-event series with support from The Japan Foundation. The first event, ”History and Culture of Edomae Sushi-From Tokyo to Seattle,” presented to a sell-out crowd on September 23rd.

Here is video of the Sept. 23rd event, produced by Ibuki Magazine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9MstyIx66A

The Nov. 3rd event included photo slides and a short video clip of Tokyo’s Chef Jiro of the acclaimed documentary ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi.’ The program featured extensive narration of sushi-related information by Yasuko Nakajima, followed by a live sushi demonstration and sampling prepared by the chefs.

Guests were seated with sushi place settings and learn about topics such as the various types of local NW fish; history and tradition of how sushi began and has evolved; different types of sushi knives; health benefits of sushi; importance of quality ingredients; how to pair various types of sake and green tea; sushi etiquette, and more.

In addition to sampling sushi, the audience learned the proper etiquette and the ‘how’s and why’s’ of sushi preparation and how it should be eaten.

Thank you to The Japan Foundation for their support of both events.

Slides from Nov 3rd Event
